SDSU uses an “eligibility index” to determine if applicants meet admissions requirements. This index is a combination of high school GPA and either the SAT or the ACT test score. SDSU multiplies the GPA by 800 and adds the total SAT score; or multiplies the GPA by 200 and adds 10 times the ACT score. Their Admissions website offers an electronic Eligibility Calculator to assist in determining the eligibility index. The positive side of the index is its comprehensive nature: if students have a low GPA, the index may be boosted by higher test scores, or vise versa. The average index of students who were offered admission for Fall 2005 was 4,048 based on SAT and 976 based on ACT. The average high school GPA was 3.63. The average SAT score was 1.144 and the average ACT score was 24.

Applications to the undergraduate programs for the fall are accepted through October through November of the prior year, with an application fee of $55. In addition to the application form and fee, students must provide high school transcripts and test scores. Applications can be submitted on-line. Students are evaluated for admissions based on where they live; there are three different geographical areas with different criteria.

College preparatory work required includes four years of English, three years of mathematics, two years of social sciences, two years of laboratory sciences, two years of a foreign language, one year of visual performing arts, and one year of electives.

Graduate students must provide the following for admissions to the graduate school: application and fee, and materials as required by the department. Students should find out what the individual departments requirements are. A graduate application has an application fee of $55. No applications are accepted for students wishing to earn a second baccalaureate degree.
