    San Diego State University Athletics

The Aztecs compete in Division I of NCAA intercollegiate athletics. The Athletics department at SDSU prides itself on instilling leadership qualities in all of its athletes. Intercollegiate sports include baseball, football, softball, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball, golf, soccer, and tennis.

The Aztecs’ all-black uniforms are one of the most recognized traditions at SDSU. Don Coryell-who is also credited with introducing modern passing to college football-originally devised the outfits. Coryell felt the all-black uniforms would be mysterious and menacing, especially during night games. The first game with the all-black outfits took place in 1963.

The Aztecs’ mascot is Montezuma, or “Monty,” and is based upon Montezuma II, the ruler of all Aztecs during the early 16th century. Students try out for the opportunity to portray Monty each year.

San Diego State University is an NCAA Division I school, with baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis for men and basketball, cross-country, diving, golf, rowing (crew), soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and water polo for women. The team nickname is the Aztecs. There is a cheerleading squad, a dance team, and a marching band.

Sports facilities include an arena, an aquatic center, a baseball stadium named for alumnus and former major league star Tony Gwynn, a track area, and an indoor athletic center. The San Diego State football team competes at Qualcomm Stadium.

Prospective students who are interested in competing can submit their athletic profile on-line.
